Web Site Update, #Veterans' Pages

I keep over scheduling my days.  It's so bad that while I was outside with the dog today I heard the cat and realized I had left the window open.  Since he was staring at me I started to tell Cat Prince about what I had already accomplished before noon and what I needed to do before 5pm so I be on time for my 7pm appointment.  I told him that I should encourage Anna Dog along.  Prince replied, "Nooooooow!" So I'm taking his advice again and sharing this now.

I have added to the veteran pages of GHC.  I've tried to provide resources that I have screened and feel comfortable sharing without sending anybody down the wrong road.  As always, I encourage you to visit Semper Fi Fund.  I find that the positive attitude of the organization is contagious.

The positive, no BS attitude is something that I prefer.  Elting Morison wrote in Men, Machines and Modern Times that a desk and a telephone created a bureaucracy.  How true!  I guess it depends on who picks up the phone.

Anyway, GHC is moving into having four pages that provide information for veterans, Veterans, Veterans' Links, Veterans' Links Page 2 and Resume Help For New Job Seekers. Yes, New Job Seekers.  Maybe the page name isn't perfect but you want a new job and nobody offered a better name for it!

My newest discovery is this 2 minute video of one of Rocky Bleier's motivational speeches.  He was a hero in my home when I was a child.  All these years later and he still is.

Tuesday Is My Busy Day

I have always tried to have a productive Tuesday.  Monday arrives and it's the official recovery from the weekend but Tuesday sets the tone for the remainder of the week so I push to make it productive.

Today was fairly productive because I was able to attend a meeting, get some filing done, make a few phone calls, process some paperwork and update the Veterans page  on my web site!

All in all I am sure that I wasted too much time watching the news updates about the riots in Baltimore.  It is sad to see that we are living in the twenty-first century and so many people are still angry about things that should have been resolved many years ago. I pray that we can live in harmony with one another and our streets remain peaceful.

It's Cold!

I have been complaining all day about the cold.  I moved south to Georgia because I know that I do not function well in cold temperatures and as I prepare this post it is 10 degrees Fahrenheit.  I have no right to complain because I am fortunate to have electricity and there are many that do not have that luxury tonight.

When I went to the store today the associates apologized that they didn't have anything left in the store that might help anybody stay warm.  People are layering their clothes and adding more blankets to their beds.  After I got home I started to goof around with my web site.  The "End of Season" markdowns are happening now!  You can order a space heater at a reduced price through this link.

I AM THE ONE TO KNOW

I'm working to get all of the parts and pieces of my life together because there are so many of them that are intertwined.  This was a challenge that I received from a friend that believes I should just mix business with pleasure.  I tried to explain that for me business is pleasure. "You leave people guessing!"  Then there were a lot of mumbles and grumbles but I ignored them.

Since I accepted the challenge I thought I should introduce myself to new followers properly and started a new social blog entitled,  'Kara said'.  I figure if people are going to take my advice they could preface it with my name!  It's a small way that I am poking the box to make a friend happy.   Please take a moment to visit Kara said.  I make no promises but hope it doesn't leave you guessing.

Taking My Own Advice

This is a little difficult but I can see that I need to take my own advice.  I seriously hate it when I must assume the responsibilities and behave like an adult instead of just continuing to have fun with my job.  I've spent a little while pouting but it's no fun so I am just going to move along.

First, please like Georgianna Hardware Corporation on facebook.  Doing a Google search for "facebook is" produced a fun list of options like "for idiots, a waste of time" and also, "dangerous".  Well, we've all thought about something like that at one time or another but it is a fun, easy way to connect with others.

I try to maintain all of the GHC social pages.  We are active on G+, Twitter and Pinterest as well as facebook.   I thank you for taking the time to follow Georgianna Hardware Corporation and look forward to making more friends.  Buy American!

Web Site Update

I was going to place a status update on the facebook page but I thought that it may be a little long and decided just to put this in a blog.

I was updating the Georgianna Hardware Corporation web site and though I am still having a little problem with the site, I stumbled upon the visitor report.  Since GHC primarily connects through social media I rarely bother looking at the report but I did tonight and had to catch my breath.  I remember telling somebody that the site had hundreds of visitors and tonight I find I have underestimated that figure.

I am absolutely thrilled that the Resume help page has been a free resource for so many people to use. Though I have had a few people mention that the resources helped them find gainful employment, I never would have known anything if they hadn't mentioned it.  The report I saw today suggests that at least one of two people I have never met found some help through the site.  I think this is great!

I would give a report about each page but I'm starting to think that the Resume page means more to me than any of the others.  I'm very proud of that page!

Blogging for GHC

Blogging for GHC has led to a little bit of trouble for me.  As I told you a while ago, I am currently alone in this venture.  It happens and I'm thrilled that I have been able to hear about the success of the people that chose to move on to greener pastures!  I know that some readers may think that I say that to be politically correct but those people are wrong.  I like to see other people succeed and it pleases me to see that happen.

Trying to stay well read on news regarding construction and manufacturing, keeping up with the GHC social pages, and maintaining the web site means that I am fairly busy.  Anyway, I have posted a blog on the GHC blog page and I would appreciate your sharing your thoughts about my changing the GHC web page host.

Greener Pastures

Come to find out people are not big on volunteering to help others make money.  Who knew?  

I can't blame anyone that wants to advance their education.  I'm excited to see young people wanting to improve their lives!  It's upbeat and positive and everything that I wish for everyone.  

It just leaves me being a little bit lonely around the office.  Take this as your warning that I will be talking about Anna and Prince as if they are humans.  (I know they are the dog and cat, but I have already caught myself talking to them!)  I will keep GHC in business and I will try to keep you up to date with construction news.

This will be a change for me and I will let you know how I'm getting along.

You Are There, Using Social Networking Websites to Promote Your Business

We've decided to do some blogs that included comments from our

discussions that occurred during the blog writing process.  

We refer to these as our "You are There" blogs!

Though we do not consider ourselves masters of social networking

we do know that we have learned a few things along the way. Our

thoughts are added in italics throughout this article.

The goal of most business owners is to make money. This often results with the selling of a particular product or service. However, to sell that product or service business owners need to alert the general public. Your customer cannot buy a product or a service if they do not know that it exists. That is why, as a business owner, you need to advertise your business.

When it comes to advertising there are many business owners who literally cringe. Are you doing this now? There is a good chance that you are because many advertising methods cost money. As a business owner you want to make money not spend it, right? Unfortunately, if you believe that all forms of advertising take money, you are sadly mistaken. Although you may have to spend money to make your business what you want it to be, there are ways to promote your business and the products or services that you sell without having to spend any money at all.

Perhaps now is the best time to jump in and voice our opinion.

When your company uses the internet to promote products and

services it does cost money! Think payroll, computer, electricity.

Is your curiosity peaked yet? There is a good chance that it is and rightfully so. One of the ways that you can promote your business, without having to spend a dime, is by using something that is readily available online. That thing is an online social networking website. A large number of internet users, in fact millions of them, belong to at least one social networking website.

Our electric bill is more than a dime so the false statement is questionable.

Right.  People need to consider the overall cost of the investment.

When it comes to social networking, there are many individuals who think of online friendships or online relationships. Social networking was first created for business purposes when in 1978 the Bulletin Board System (or BBS) was established. The BBS was hosted on personal computer and required users to dial in through a host computer. In fact, BBS was the original social network.

I have a thought! It's was like ham radio vs. Sirius.

If you are a small business owner, especially one that operates an online business, there is a way that you can use social networking sites to your advantage.

Although social networking websites are traditionally focused on those that would like to make online friends or develop online relationships, there are networking sites that are designed for business owners. These websites will not only allow you to share your business information with other business owners, but it will also allow you to develop close relationships with those that share an interest that is similar to yours. Essentially, this means that you could not only learn valuable business information, but you could also walk away with a new business partner or a new friend.

We looked at both words used in the term “social networking”.

Of the those definitions we most liked, “the exchange of

information or services among individuals”.

As previously mentioned, social networking websites with a focus on businesses, are a great way to promote your business. However, this does not mean that you should completely forget about the other online social networking websites, the ones that are designed to make online friendships. Although you may not learn any valuable business tips by joining Yahoo! Facebook or Google+, you may be able to get new customers and new customers is exactly what your business wants.

If you are looking to join an online community, you will need to create your own profile or profile page. If you are planning on joining a traditional social networking website, to gain access to millions of potential new customers, you are urged to be careful when making your online webpage or profile. One thing that internet users hate is being solicited for business. This does not mean that you cannot use social networking to your advantage; it just means that you need to be careful with how you do it.

Who knows, but that interest generated could turn into sales; thus making your social networking experience more than worth it.

We've noticed that social networking advice almost always

includes something about being human.

It's no surprise that people prefer to interact with

other people rather than a machine.

Junk mail has never been a favorite

so why would junk email be any better?

Social networking is easy. Be human, just like you are.

Have a presence on the world wide web. It is the world's community.

Picking Your Dream Design

I read a lot. I jump from subject to subject all day long and even leave the television muted so I can read the ticker at the bottom of the screen. While I was using my computer today I quickly typed in a search and a document entitled, “Picking Your Dream Design” appeared in my search results. I read through the document and decided I would share the key comments with you. The question? What was the article about? (answer below)

     Even though it's popular, many people will end up regretting it.

     Instead of trying to save some money, you should never make

     a choice based on how cheap it is.

     Cheaper companies normally lack in work quality, 

     which is why they are able to charge cheaper prices.

     Instead, you should look for the best company that you can find

     close to your area.  Even though it may be expensive – the quality

     and design will be well worth it.

     Sometimes, it can be hard picking out your dream design. If you have

     an idea in mind but are still not sure what you want, you can always

     do research.

     Use books, magazines, or just research online. By looking at designs you 

     may find something similar to what you would like.

     If you start with a fraction of your dream design,

     you can always finish it up later on.

     You should decide carefully. If you put the necessary time 

     and thought into it now, you won’t regret it later.

We all have dreams and visions of things that we desire. What was the article about? Remodeling a kitchen or a tattoo? The answer: a tattoo. There are times that we should take the time to think about our designs.

State of the Union

It seems that the State of the Union is pretty much status quo.  From what I can tell, our government is too afraid to take real action.  Instead our officials are going to talk about it and take some time to think about it. This means we at GHC need to push extra hard to keep sharing information that will help you and other Americans achieve greater success.  

Back when we first started our business we featured toys that we made in America by Melissa and Doug.  I guess that most of us have always wanted to drive a big truck or a loader and fell in love with the thought back when we were children.  Melissa and Doug give children that opportunity and it is great to see that their small company has grown over these few years to a business that simply wows us.   Your business can do that too!

December Notables

Our December Notables page is up and running!

Though the first item we listed on our page was certainly not one we were looking into, we found a bargain on  the Samsung Series 7 Gamer 17.3 Inch (Yellow) Laptop.  Yellow?  Well, we found different opinions about the color and it turns out we've decided we'd be okay with saving twenty percent and adjust to not having the same model in black.

November Update

Who would have guessed that OSHA would have been included in our final update to our November Notables page?  Yesterday's blog was entitled, December 15th Brings New Regulations for Residential Builders.  The more research we did the more we found that this is not something to be ignored.  Though we didn't find that there were additional OSHA inspectors we did find that citations and fines for lack of fall protection had been issued within the last three months.  Some of these fines were substantial.  Please visit our November 2012  to confirm that you are prepared for the newest OSHA regulations.

Oh, My. Cyber Monday!

Black Friday started on Thursday and rolled over into the weekend.  Now we're at Cyber Monday.  Gosh, will the best deals be available on Tuesday?  When I hit two for two of the items I had been looking for as being "sold out" within the first hour I decided to quit.

On our Shopping page we have direct links for Cyber Monday Deals Week, Deal of The Day, and deals that are available through Amazon Mom.  If you're going to be shopping for deals on Cyber Monday we've tried to make it a little easier for you.  Those bargains are out there and actually, I found one of those "sold out" items was available through Amazon.  They had a better price too!  Hope you have the same experience.

The Final Debate

Tonight we'll have the final debate.  I'm barely over the last one!  So much excitement, so many news reports, the post debate debating has been a constant.  Even though I love this stuff and find it hard to keep a fairly neutral position, I've become tired of it all.

Tonight I heard Don Lemon having a conversation with two men.  Don was level headed and that reminded me of what I was going to blog about today, being patient.

We need to be patient and wait for answers.  We need to be patient and the economy will recover.  We need to be patient with everything.  Well, the guy behind me that blew his horn when the light turned green wasn't very patient.  It seems nobody is patient.  Neither were either one on Don Lemon's guests.  Then, in the next segment of news the year 2025 was reference.  Really?  I can't wait for the debate and I'm sure happy that I remembered to buy popcorn for tonight!

The End of Another Week, The End of Another Month

     For whatever reason, time passes too quickly.  This week we finished some follow-up work from last week and we connected with a few more businesses and people from coast to coast.  It's work, but it is fun and exciting.  The concept of "Social Networking" was something that we believed in and we were right!  

     The biggest problem for anybody that uses the new found social network is the availability of time.  We've been able to find imaginative personnel and we hope you have too.  There cannot be enough said about how employees need to adapt and react quickly to changes.  This will always be important to production of any sort.  

     We have a meeting each month to remind ourselves of the reasons that we started Georgianna Hardware Corporation.  It's the end of another week, the end of another month.  Time to re-think our business practices.  Use our web page to spark your creativity.  Remember, this matters.

The Numbers of Unemployed vs. Unfed

Sometimes news reports give us statistics about unemployment and include numbers about underemployed. The reports often include references to states or regions and they factor in whichever quarter the author decides to reference.  It gets confusing.  Whatever variables are included in reports, it is no wonder people don't like numbers, but it is basic elementary school math.

It is important to know that nobody knows exactly how many people are employed because nobody counts them. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the numbers based on a random sampling of the population. When was the last time you were included in a “random sampling”? Talk about variables!

Today, when I was reading about the labor market in the United States of America I read that the unemployment rate dropped from 8.3 percent to 8.1 percent. This is better than the ten percent that was reported in October of 2009 but that doesn't give us any actual facts, but I am more concerned about SNAP.

SNAP is the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program that we commonly refer to as “food stamps”. Reports have been released that fifteen percent of American citizens at receiving benefits from the SNAP program. Again, it is basic elementary school math. Stop one hundred people on the street and fifteen of them require nutritional assistance. 

More jobs will always mean there is less unemployment, but it will also reduce the number of hungry people.  Please help your local food pantry or visit Feeding America. 

Yep, It Is A Small Business!

Sure, a lot of you are small business owners.  It's fun and exciting.  There is never a moment that goes by that you don't have something to think about.  It's fun.  Really, I'm reminding you that it is fun!

Well, owning a business is fun until a service provider decides to change the terms and conditions of your agreement!  That is what happened to me today.  Not as though I'm alone.  I know I heard that a telephone company did this to its customers fairly recently.  

I deterred my husband from getting a smart phone citing the learning curve and the potential cost.  As I think back it seems that it wasn't too long ago that I whined about people putting the cart before the horse.  Telling my husband that he didn't need a smart phone was my way of admitting that I had put the cart before the horse.  I've had my smart phone for a year and I still haven't figured it out.  Basically, I'm the proud owner of a camera that I can make phone calls with.  

I apologize for venting like this, but I want you to all know that you are not alone.  Go ahead and laugh with me because you know it's nice to get these stupid problems resolved and I'll be off to check on our highway bill.  I wish you a good day!

Neat Website

I immediately thought of our friends and followers when I ran across this site today and I wanted to share it as soon as possible

fiverr.com/ is just as the name says.  Fiverr claims to be the world's largest marketplace for small services.  You only need to join and then you can buy or sell according to their service terms.  It's a neat way to have a greeting card made or to get travel ideas.  Some things are bizarre, some are useful, and some are just funny.

I'm Not Kidding, It's Easy

I had exciting news last week.  Georgianna Hardware Corporation officially became a friend of The Road Connection.  I first saw The Road Connection in January of this year when they started their year long campaign.
Since then, The Road Connection has put over 7,000 into their effort.

It's great to see that people and businesses recognize the need for safe roads and bridges.  The Road Connection's sponsors encourage everyone to nominate what they believe is the worst road or bridge in America.  All nominations will be included in their presentation to congress.  These guys are willing to be your voice.  They just ask that you send a picture to help them prepare their report.  If you do nominate a Worst Road or Bridge you are entered to win a Truxedo Lo Pro QT truck bed cover.
